THE IMPORTANCE OF THE OLD
TESTAMENT:
Types and Shadows: Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all
the prophets,he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things
concerning
himself. 44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you,
while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were
written
law of Mosesin the, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
1 Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for
ensamples:
and
they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and
not
the
very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered
year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES:
The Tripartite Division of the Old Testament: The Jews early divided the Old
Testament writings into three classes: (1) the Torah, or Law; (2) the Nebhium,
or Prophets; and (3) the Kethubhim, or Writings, called in Greek the
Hagiographa. The Torah included the 5 books of the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), which were called "the Five fifths of the
Law." The Nebhi'im embraced (a) the four so-called Former Prophets, Joshua,
Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, counted as one book, 1 and 2 Kings, also counted as
one book; and (b) the four so-called Latter Prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah,
Ezekiel, and the Twelve Minor Prophets, counted as one book; a total of
8 books. The Kethubhim, or Writings, were 11 in all, including Psalms,
Proverbs, and Job, the five Meghilloth or Rolls (Canticles, Ruth, Lamentations,
Ecclesiastes, Esther), Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah, counted as one book, and 1 and
2 Chronicles, also counted as one book; in all 24 books, exactly the same as
those of the Protestant canon.
This was the original count of the Jews as far
as we can trace it back. Later certain Jewish authorities appended Ruth to
Judges, and Lamentations to Jeremiah and thereby obtained the number 22,
which corresponded to the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet; but this
manner of counting was secondary and fanciful. Still later others divided
Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, Ezra-Nehemiah and Jeremiah-Lamentations into two
books each respectively and thereby obtained 27, which they fancifully
regarded as equivalent to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet plus 5,
the number of letters having a peculiar final form when standing at the end
of a word. Jerome states that 22 is the correct reckoning, but he adds,
"Some count both Ruth and Lamentations among the Hagiographa, and so get 24."
4 Exodus, which is the oldest (85-96 AD) witness to the number of books in
the Old Testament, gives 24.

our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Hebrews 9:15 And
for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death,
for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament,
they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JEHOVAH AND ISRAEL AND HOW IT WAS FORGED:
The relationship between God and Israel began with the promises He made to the
Fathers, Abraham Isaac and Jacob.
Genesis 35:10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall
not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his
name Israel. 11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and
multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall
come out of thy loins; 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee
I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
Through spiritual revelation and experience Jacob received a new name from
Jehovah in Heaven. Exodus 1:1 Now these are the names of the children of
Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with 2 Jacob.
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan,
and Naphtaii, Gad, and Asher.
Exodus 2:23 And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt
died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they
cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage 24 And God
heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with
Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God
had respect unto them.
GOD CALLED MOSES AND REVEALED TO HIM THAT HE WANTED TO
FULFILL HIS PROMISE MADE TO ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB. SO HE COMMANDED HIM TO
GO TO PHARAOH AND DEMAND TH;: RELEASE OF HIS PEOPLE ISRAEL WHOM HE REGARDED
WITH AFFECTION AND AS A SON.
Exodus 6:5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of
Israel,
whom
the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.
6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring
you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of
their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and great
judgments:
7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye
shall know that I am the LORD yor God, which bringeth you out from under the
burdens of the Egyptians.
8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to
give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it you for an
heritage: I am the LORD.
In Deuteronomy 7:15 Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them,
and he chose their seed after
